The two governing bodies, along with New England Junior Rugby Union, issued a statement on Tuesday advising that the North West Regional Youth Rugby Friday Night Comp and the Sunday Gala Days had been would not resume.

“Although we would prefer to play out our season and reach a result from a finals series, the health and safety of our players and greater communities is paramount,” the statement read.

“Unfortunately, it is not feasible, practical or responsible to continue with our 2021 season.”

The statement said that factors including the lockdown being lifted or not being lifted this Saturday, current health orders, washed out games, field availability, end of term dates, return to play protocols and risk mitigation were all included.

“We would like to thank all our players, sponsors, committees, coaches, referees, volunteers, families and supporters for all your efforts and commitment to rugby in the Central North and New England zones,” it went on to read.

“The coming months will see our zone and competition executives work closely with our development officers, club and school committees, and coaches to plan the 2022 XVs and 10s competitions.”

The statement also indicated that the 2022 season would include some exciting new developments and opportunities.
