Narrabri Garden Club members gathered for their final meeting in the George Foxe Horticultural Pavilion on Wednesday morning.

The event was tinged with nostalgia – the pavilion was named in honour of one of Narrabri’s leading horticulturists and championship winning exhibitor. The pavilion is to be demolished soon to make way for a state -of-the-art building, part of many improvements to be undertaken at the Narrabri Showground.

“I have been told the original pavilion was a bark building with a thatched roof,” said garden club president and Narrabri Show life member Wendy McNair.

The old building has been the venue for decades of fantastic flower shows as well as other events.

Some controversy surrounds the age of the George Foxe Pavilion – it has been suggested that it was built by the late Mr Foxe in the 1930s, others attribute it to the 1940s.

Whatever its age, the building is destined to go.

Wednesday’s garden club meeting and morning tea at the pavilion was attended by former exhibitors and interested gardeners.

The garden club had assembled memorabilia from the many years the building has hosted flower shows.

A special section on the late George Foxe included some of his many trophies, including state titles, won for his displays, notably roses. Meanwhile, the garden club looks forward to continuing ever more successfully.
